gulf fritillary

A common butterfly of our area, bedding down for the night on a sprig of rosemary. I hope it is safe from spiders.
The camera does not do it justice. The spots that appear white in the image are really a metallic silver.

Posted by: Leslie at August 18, 2004 01:52 PMBeautiful, beautiful picture..........Today I had 2 monarchs on the milkweed- the first ones I have seen in weeks......managed to get a couple of pictures. Our summer has been so cool until now plus I had a lot of damage in the garden from the hailstorms- I was afraid for the monarch migration.......some of the plants have recovered so hopefully if the warm weather continues I will see more monarchs. The sedum is just now beginning to blossom so hopefully the Painted Ladies will be arriving...........The zinnias suffered from the storms but I have seen one black swallowtail- hope she returns.......These butterflies have become a passion with me.........
