rss

It's been raining here since Monday and besides I've been distracted from the garden lately. Kathy, one of the authors of Cold Climate Gardening, has turned me on to Bloglines and rss feeds.

The jury is still out on this for me, but I am beginning to see the convenience of it. It's a great way to browse through your blogroll and see just what is new. The only problem is that some of my regular reads don't seem to have rss feeds. If I haven't visited your site recently, this is probably why. Moveable Type makes it easy, but don't ask me how to start one if you use anything else.

RSS feeds tend to suppress any special formatting and hyperlinks, something which I have been toying around with lately. I looked at them briefly and decided against them once I saw what they did to my own blog.

I will not do unto you what I would rather you didn't do unto me.

Bill, call me Kathy! And Joel, I don't view using a feed reader as a replacement for going to a blog and viewing the real thing. It's just a teaser to let me know the treat I'm in for. If I'm going to read it, I always click on the link to the orignating source. Not all RSS feeds are even set up to show you the whole post.

There are positives and negatives. As Joel said, if you stay strictly in the reader you miss the look and feel of the individual blog, which so many of us have taken great care to personalize.

Kathy, sorry about the name. Originally I put Kathy and then I saw that you had Kathleen on your blog. Now I know.
