mexican hat

mexican hat

I found a small colony of mexican hat in the meadow where I had sowed a wildflower mix.

So far at least, there has not been much result from the seeds there. I’ve seen an occasional solitary blanket flower or bluebonnet or paint brush, all looking like gaunt survivors of a nuclear holocaust. I’ve already mentioned that the standing cypress are doing pretty well though. And now there is this colony of mexican hat. If past experience is any guide these will multiply into many more next year.

Last year this area was solidly covered in plains coreopsis, but this year there is not a one to be seen. It always amazes me the way nature changes from year to year.

  1. “gaunt survivors of a nuclear holocaust” That’s the best description of a Texas summer I’ve read yet.
