mr toad

Filed under: muse day — 5/2/2008

Apparently there is a garden bloggers muse day that I haven’t noticed until now. So in honor of the toad whose photo I posted yesterday, I am posting this poem from Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

The world has held great Heroes,
As history-books have showed;
But never a name to go down to fame
Compared with that of Toad!

The clever men at Oxford
Know all that there is to be knowed.
But they none of them know one half as much
As intelligent Mr Toad!

The animals sat in the Ark and cried,
Their tears in torrents flowed.
Who was it said, “There’s land ahead”?
Encouraging Mr Toad!

The army all saluted
As they marched along the road.
Was it the King? Or Kitchener?
No. It was Mr Toad.

The Queen and her Ladies-in-waiting
Sat at the window and sewed.
She cried, “Look! Who’s that HANDSOME man?”
They answered, “Mr Toad.”

  1. Mr. McGregor's Daughter:

According to one psychiatrist, Mr. Toad exhibits the classic symptoms of Bipolar Disorder. This information made me take a fresh look at “Wind in the Willows,” one of my favorite novels from childhood.

been too long since i read it for me to comment on that. sounds interesting though.

I want toads and froggies in my garden…no water, except for a birdbath sigh!
