botanical gardens

It’s wonderful that the Botanical Gardens in Ft Worth does not charge admission to most of its site. That way you don’t have to walk the entire grounds or stay half a day to feel that you are getting your money’s worth. Thursday I had a free hour and was in the neighborhood, so decided to see what was going on.

This is the rose garden, as seen from a pavillion at the top of the hill. The pear tree in the distance enjoys its moment of stardom before the roses start their show. Usually there is water cascading down that center row of stone ponds, but the pump was out of order.

A trifoliate orange before the leaves come out. A friend once suggested I plant these in front of my windows to keep intruders out.

A mountain laurel in north Texas, not yet blooming. Behind it is an English walnut in front of a wall of bamboo. The walnut has a plaque proclaiming it to be a “regional champion tree.”

  1. I like the formality of the rose garden. And the water features are so appealing especially during a Texas summer. I haven’t visited Fort Worth in more than 20 years. When I used to go up there to visit relatives, my free time was always spent at the Kimball Art Museum. I didn’t know about the botanical gardens.

PS…I LOVE the trifoliate orange. But then I garden in the style of Morticia Addams.

You might like the japanese garden section. It closes at 5 and I didn’t get there until 4:50, so I passed on it this visit.

I LOVE the picture of the trifoliate orange. And ironically, my roommate has one in a pot on the back deck, which she got after she saw the one you took a picture of. :)

  4. Hi Bill,
We went up a couple of years ago to see the art museums and the cowgirl hall of fame but it was not-nice weather in February and we didn’t even try to see the Botanical Garden. I hope there will be a next time – it looks very interesting.
