the ufo

Filed under: current events — 1/24/2008

The past week the talk around the hardware store and after church has turned to UFO’s.  As a topic it’s a welcome respite from talk about the weather, and way safer than venturing an opinion on politics.  The reason for the talk of course  is the recent sightings just down the road around Stephenville.

So far I haven’t come across anyone with first-hand experience.  The closest I heard was a fellow who got a call from a neighbor that something with lights on it was up above his barn.  But this fellow didn’t actually see it himself.

Most people seem to lean to the opinion that it is something military.  There are planes on training missions around here all the time.  But folks have been having fun with it.   The sign in front of the auction barn says “free parking for UFOs” and another at a barbecue place says “martians eat free.”

Nevertheless I am keeping my eyes peeled and I carry a camera in the glove box.  Rest assured that if anything turns up, readers here will be the first to know.

So that was up in your neck of the woods, eh? This was my favorite quote from the AP story.

“People wonder what in the world it is because this is the Bible Belt, and everyone is afraid it’s the end of times,” said Steve Allen, a freight company owner and pilot who said the object he saw last week was a mile long and half a mile wide. “It was positively, absolutely nothing from these parts.”

    Damn that faith-based education.
