bloom day

Not a lot is blooming around here in August. Mostly we are just trying to keep the leaves green for another month.

One plant that does seem happy though is Turk’s Cap. It’s even blooming in places where I haven’t been watering. And somewhat surprisingly the leucophylum are blooming a little. They usually only bloom when it rains. So I wonder if that means it is going to rain. I hope, I hope.

I took these snapshots while playing around with a Canon A560 that I got Tricia for her birthday last month. She was using a really old digital with only 1.5 megapixels. The case was broken from a fall so you had to hold the battery door closed with your hand while using it.

Mostly she uses her camera to document completed quilt projects, but she also will take one along for events sometimes. She did not want anything complicated or fancy and this camera is pretty basic. It’s also pretty small. It will fit in a shirt pocket although the weight and size make it somewhat awkward. A pants pocket or a purse would work though. Even though it’s little, there is a handgrip on the right side so you can hold it easily (if you are right-handed). It’s really easy to use and it’s got a lot of pixels. Some experts claim pixels are not all that important but I like to crop my photos, so as far as I am concerned the more pixels the merrier. I am amazed at how nice this is for a basic camera.

The week after I picked it out I went to a community event down at the fire station. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was two women holding the exact same camera. So if popularity counts that’s another thing in its favor.

I know what you mean about just keeping leaves green. That’s what I’m doing, since it has been unusually dry here in Indiana.

The pictures did turn out great, that red of the turk’s cap is so vivid. I also have a Canon digital camera (different model) and I’ve been pretty happy with it, especially how easy it is to use, and mine is small enough to fit in my pocket.

Thanks for posting for bloom day,

  2. Very nice camera, I think. Your turks cap looks good. Mine are blooming but the leaves are all raggedy and look like they have some sort of mold on the underside…or fungus. Something rotten anyway.

  3. My Turk’s cap give me only one bloom at a time – yours looks twice as nice!

It’s been raining in NW Austin and may get to you. I guess the Humidity Shrub knew about Tropical Storm Erin.
