I love this grass, little bluestem or Schizachyrium scoparium. I have to wonder why gardeners don’t plant it as an ornamental.

This stand is across the road from our front gate so I see it every time I drive anywhere. In fact I see nice stands all over. Evidently it liked the wet spring we had.

Little bluestem is one of the dominant grasses of the prairies and in openings in woods from Mexico to Canada.

We also have beautiful grass up here this year.

I tried bushy bluestem in my garden once, but it didn’t fit into the cottage garden look. I think it looks better in an open setting, like your little bluestem.

Osage County and the Tallgars Prairie in Oklahoma brag of their bluestem grass..Take a look see if you are ever near here..

Oh That is Nice!! I bet you could start a trend by clumping it together in a garden…like Pampas grass.

I actually have little bluestem planted in my gardens as an ornamental! I have two groupings of three plants each, and I absolutely adore them–the silvery blue color is a real shot in the arm. Maybe I should post a picture of it. That said, it looks amazing in this more natural habitat, too.

I keep trying, but I can’t seem to be concise in my post writing… so go ahead and scroll through the words, but check out the picture of one of my two clumps of little bluestem in the garden, here:
