late frost

img_7317.JPG

Snow fell almost the entire day Saturday, although it melted about as fast as it fell. More worrisome was the drop in temperature which is expected to be below freezing tonight. A pair of hummingbirds arrived a few days ago and have been regulars at a window feeder. Today they seemed confused, as if they wanted to be on the inside of the window. Our spring wildflowers may be confused too. We’ve had a nice abundance of them so far.

I don’t know how unusual it is to have snow this late in the year. That’s one of the little tidbits of information that weathermen are good for and which we miss by not having TV. I could research it myself. I seem to remember that in 1987 there was snow on the ground in Dallas when I moved there on April 1.

VERY unusual, at least for Austin. Central Austin didn’t see any snow, but we got sleet for a while last night. And just north of us, Georgetown received snow for around an hour. Totally bizarre!

Your snowy bluebonnets will be something to remember.

The authorities said it has been over 69 years since there was snow on the ground in Dallas in April; there were only flurries at DFW airport, so that yesterday didn’t count– no snow on the ground.

  3. Down in South Austin, I didn’t see any sleet but we got small hail about 5:30 PM, Saturday.

I think I have a photo of a bluebonnet in the snow, too, but it was one February awhile back and just one little bud. Nothing as dramatic as your photo. Wow!

How is the rest of your garden doing? First floods and now snow.

Looks like the bluebonnets in your photoaare holding up well. Tough plants. More precip in whatever form is good, yes?

  6. We got pretty close to that freezing mark in NW Austin, but escaped an actual freeze. Many opened flowers were a soggy mess from the cold rain.

Your photo is really lovely, Bill. Do those bluebonnets look fine today? They’ve always seemed pretty tough to me.
