prairie point

in which we sail away to oz

It got a little scary here yesterday.

Some say the winds got up to 60 miles an hour. I don’t know for sure since we don’t have any equipment to measure wind speed. But I can say that it was the most wind I’ve experienced since I sat out a hurricane in Houston back in 1983.

I was here alone. Tricia had gone into the city for a meeting. Shortly after noon we lost power and I went outside to see if I could see any trees in the power lines. The light was eerie. Everything seemed extremely white. The sun was obscured by the dust.

I determined that the outage was not due to any problem on the lines crossing our property. I sat inside and listened to the wind howl. The dust got so thick outside the windows it seemed like we were in a cloud. I opened the door and looked out just to make sure the house was still on the ground.

The power was off for over two hours. We did not experience any damage. One old rotting tree fell down. But, it was the tree my wife has been asking me to cut down. And it even fell away from the house. (See, there is an advantage to putting things off).

I did not like being out of touch for over two hours. I thought about going out to sit in the truck just so I could check the news on the radio. I need to get a battery operated radio for situations like this.

It seems to me that the weather has been strange all over the country lately - last Saturday here in St. Louis we had rain storms. My neighbor across the street had a tree limb fall onto a power line which caused a fire on the tree. The fire dept. came & just watched it until the tree limb fell to the ground. Since it was raining the fire just fizzled out. Our electric company has been under great critisism for several months - we have had 3 major power outages, yet the electric company is seeking major rate hikes. The electric company is way behind in trimming the trees & vines that cover the power lines…………I have power lines across my back yard & will lose power on the sunniest of days……..I have an easement next to my house, yet no company owns up to taking care of the overhanging trees - last year I spent $500. to have the trees trimmed that were hanging over my house…….I was not pleased……….

We also had an extreme wind for about a day and a half, though it’s much too muddy here to have any dust. Apparently it was all part of the same massive front that spawned the tornadoes in Georgia and Alabama and the blizzards in the upper Great Plains. March weather is often stormy, particularly around the equinox which is still to come!
