Once again I am having trouble with my laptop.  Just thought I would let you know. In case I don’t post for awhile or answer my emails right away, no need to send out a search party.

The problem this time seems to be same as it was about a year ago.  The computer won’t boot up.  Instead the num-lock light comes on and that’s all that happens.   Several weeks ago it started happening when the machine was warm.   I think it may have something to do with over-heating.

Last year I got it fixed for about $100 at a local shop.  I can’t even remember now what he did.  I need to find the receipt. Far worse than the dollar outlay was the trouble of re-installing software and the danger of losing data.

Another weird thing  is that the browser I use - Firefox - seems to have developed a weird glitch.  Sometimes it doesn’t open a new tab when it is supposed to.  I noticed that when it does this, there are also no favicons on any of the tabs that do show.  At first when this happened I would just close down the browser and reopen it.  Then by accident I discovered that if  I go up to the main toolbar and  click on any item, the missing icons and tabs all appear. Anybody know what’s up with that? I wonder if it is related to the other problem?

My advice, for what it’s worth, go out and get yourself an external hard drive, and get your data backed up off the laptop.

It’s good habit to do this once a week or so (..and I am guilty of not backing up work files… should do that right now…)

You can find these units for a reasonable price. Buy the size of your harddrive on the laptop - doubled.

    Good luck!

When I run in Windows, I like to use the Opera browser–small, fast, uncluttered. Most of the time I run in Linux and use either the Linux version of Opera or Mozilla. Linux is nice for going on the internet because it is lots more secure than Windows, and I have never had any virus trouble with it.

Hope you get the hardware problems licked. Can’t say much about those!

I agree with Jenn, back up your hard drive to an external drive. I had my hard drive go out in December and was madly doing all kinds of things to get the laptop to boot up and run long enough to copy over all the files. I managed to save most of them. Then a friend helped me install a new hard drive and all is well. In the process of installing the new hard drive, and re-installing all the software, I also fixed a few other glitches that had been happening. Sometimes, just re-imaging the laptop or PC is a good thing, sort of like a clean slate. However, I know it is a lot of work!
