a daytrip

After getting the attic door installed, I figured I was due a day out. Besides yesterday was my birthday. So bright and early (okay, before noon) we packed up and headed out to a place that has been high on my list of destinations for a long time - Archer City.

Booklovers know the place as not only where The Last Picture Show was filmed, but also as the home of Larry McMurtry’s famous bookstore. The store is spread out over multiple old buildings around the courthouse square. In fact not much else is there except for municipal offices and the remains of the old movie house. It was windy and tumbleweeds were blowing across the highway just like in the movie.

We browsed in the bookstore for a while and I found a copy of A Texan’s Garden of Trivia, containing a wealth of information on the Lone Star State. Armed with this book I am certain to win Cowtown Pattie’s trivia contest.

  1. I could spend several days browsing through all those books. We stayed about 3 hours, and Kent said I had spent too much already, so we skedaddled.

The books are kind of pricey, but boy what a choice!

Belated birthday best wishes! I love bookstores, especially the ones in small towns that you don’t expect to be so big. Thee is one near my woods that I try to sneak to on my way home from the woods. Don’t get that chance very often though.

Great thing to do on your (happy) birthday! BTW, this picture is excellent. I forget how effective black & white can be.
