the yearling
Last summer we were surprised to find a little fawn sleeping in the grass within a small fenced side yard. We were having some guests over for a barbecue and the fawn was quite the star of the party. That was before we had moved out here and we were visiting the property only on the occasional weekend.

Now here she is all grown up.
Actually there were two fawns born that spring. The other one we found in the woods a couple hundred feet the other side of the driveway you see up there. I am not certain which is which. The other one is male. I’ll try to get a picture of it too.
Both still stay pretty close to the property. We see them just about every day. In the summer we would only see them in the early morning or evening. Now they are apt to be out and about any time of day.
Besides these two, there is a small herd that passes through fairly regularly, including a good-looking buck with a pretty nice set of horns. He’s pretty skittish. I’d like to to get a picture of him, but I’m afraid time is running out. Deer season opens tomorrow and I would not give you any odds on his survival.
This shot also gives you a sense of some of the landscape we’ve inherited. That area where she is standing is bermuda and irises. There are also two smallish post oaks, one just off each side of the picture frame. I’m thinking of salvia and yucca here instead, and maybe a low stone wall or a rustic cedar fence at this edge of the gravel.
