what part of the country are you from?

I often try to guess where people are from by listening to their speech patterns. Back in the city I had lots of opportunities to do this because so many people have relocated there from other parts of the country. Turns out I am not so good at guessing based on the test I just took.

How about you? Think you can tell where someone is from their speech? Take the test.

Well I always thought I was pretty good too, but obviously not. I got 2 right!

I guessed six of them right, but none from the midwest or west. The samples didn’t sound that distinctive to me, but I didn’t even realize I had a Chicago accent until my kids brought friends home from college, and my speech amused them.

One thing I did not like abou the test was the rather broad geographic categories. For instance lumping Texas and all the SE states as one. One of my early childhood memories was visting my Louisiana cousins and enduring their laughter at my accent. Pretty strange when you consider how funny they talked!
