We think the sunflowers came into our yard from the bird feed. Anyway for many years now we have had sunflowers popping up here and there. Sometimes we yank them and sometimes we leave them alone. Last year I yanked up several that I had let get big. I threw them out on the lawn and left them. The pile was a favorite hangout for the birds. Guess where they were?

You had a great flower weekend/beautiful photos. For us, in this northern climate, it was the weekend to finish planting our garden including dozen of kinds of herbs for home cooking. Also relocated some flowers/hostas and added lots of mulch to front flower beds.
(This weekend, while working, I was remembering Grandma Tarkington’s flower yard at the home where she lived in Kerens–the one that is just off the Bazette Road. I used to go up there every weekend, mow her grass, sleep over for the evening, and walk to school the next day. Her yard was almost totally in flowers, and she spent a good part of every day out hoeing, planting, trimming, and collecting seed. I only had a few paths to mow through the yard, plus the ditches and marginal strips along both roads of her corner lot. Dad did not allow me to charge anything for the mowing, but I enjoyed the break in usual routine.)
Rain fell this morning/Monday morning to cap our gardening efforts.
Sent a new essay to Tales from Elm Flat, http://www.kerens.com, “Teachers in Kerens,” but it is not posted quite yet. Take care, ivan/medina, ohio
We have sunflowers coming up too! lol, it is a fun addition to the garden and you never know where they will be coming up. I have 2 nice ones amongst the tomatoes.
I always let the seeds sprout under the feeder. I get the coolest plants there! and Yep, Sunflowers volunteer freely!
