I like small-town festivals. This weekend found Tricia and me in Dublin Texas for the 115th birthday party of the local Dr Pepper bottling company, which is said to be the only one that still uses sugar instead of fructose. If I drank sodas this would be the one I would drink. They even changed the name of the town for the occasion.
There were craft booths, a giant on stilts, cowboys on horseback, beauty queens, and of course free Dr Pepper. The afternoon was capped off by Billy Joe Shaver, who put on a great show of his own. Old time family fun.

I didn’t realize they still used sugar. Huh.
Does the sugared Dr Pepper taste different? Better? I don’t drink soft drinks very often, but if I’m going to splurge I’d like it to be authentic. (I never, never, never drink anything with artificial sweeteners.)
Hmm. Maybe they should combine this festival with Spam-a-Rama. Spam sure makes your thirsty.
Actually it does taste a little different to me. The sweetness doesn’t seem to stay in your mouth for as long. To me that means better.
We enjoy small town festivals also. With the price of gas, staying close to home is an added bonus.
I just cant do Dr. Pepper! It tastes too much like Cherry and I cant stand that!! Now Pepsi, or Coke or RC I can do just fine.
Dear B.,
Aren’t the folks in Waco ticked off that Dublin’s stealing their thunder?
I grew up hearing that the secret of Dr. Pepper’s taste was prune juice and, though not a straight prune juice person, I can believe that’s true. It is weird good stuff.
Thanks for the cool post!

We thought about going to Dublin. Ended up in Elm Mott instead, looking for old barn wood.
As to our success- we should have gone to Dublin.
wow…i haven’t thought of dublin in a while! i lived in tolar and hico for several years; my (ex) husband proposed to me in a hospital just south of dublin…
that whole area south of granbury has a certain rugged beauty. your pics and posts have brought back some sweet memories.
never did like dr. pepper, though, sugared or not…
