prickly poppy

prickly poppy

Here is another flower I haven’t posted before. The foliage looks weedy and ugly to most people’s taste, but there is no denying that the flower is a beauty.

It certainly is a beauty, and you have a wonderful talent for framing these beauties in your photos. My hobby is oil painting, and flowers are my favourite subject. Would you mind if I painted this one? I would love to paint your echinacea (from June 14/04) as well, if you would allow me.

    Linda: Thanks.

Pablo: I don’t know how to tell honey bees from other bees, I guess. I thought honey bees were bigger.

Janet: Do you really think it is framed well? I was just noticing that the flower is actually slightly taller than it is wide. I was wondering about cropping the image to more closely resemble the dimensions of the flower. Or even rotating it so that the bee was on top and then cropping it.

If I was going to crop it, I’d make it square. I personally like objects to be a bit off-kilter to add interest, and cropping it to match its dimensions perfectly would be too, well… perfectly ordinary. (In fact, my paintings tend to be off-centre and often go right round the edge of the canvas). I would definitely not rotate it — the bee looks nicely perched on the side of the flower, hinting at its movement. If you rotated it, the shadows would then be going downwards, and horizontal shadows not only look compelling but also indicate that its early or late in the day. And the pollen would then be dropping horizontally!

I’ll try to remember to send a photo of my paintings when they’re done (but may need a reminder!).

The petals almost look like they’re made of crepe paper — so delicate.

Guess who finally has a few little blossoms opening up? *big grin*

now that’s how I love to see a flower photographed with every bit of it in sharp focus. I would not make it square; off-center or eccentric is much more interesting. even the bee is lovely.

Those look like our Matilija poppies which are about four inches across and feature a large stamen/pistel. Getting about the time of year for them.
