r.i.p. laptop

Well, the laptop is history. It will barely boot up now and when it does, it freezes after five or ten minutes. I did a search on the model number in one of Dell’s user forums and others have had the same problem with this model. Apparently it is the motherboard.

So I am now in the market for a computer. Tricia will let me borrow hers for a time, but she needs it too. I don’t know whether I should get another laptop or a desktop. The Dell laptop was disappointing but Tricia’s Dell desktop has been dependable. Or maybe it is time to switch to Apple? So many decisions.

If you get a Macbook Pro, you can also boot Windows XP

Of course, the first releases of Macbook have been pretty buggy. I’ve heard of loud whines, and too much heat off the motherboard.

Desktops are tougher stuff. It’s hard life for a laptop, no matter how carefully you treat it.

  3. You might consider having one built if you know someone good. I, after many decades, finally got a new one. An Intel dealer is a friend and he built a super one for about the cost of a Dell. Plus it doesn’t have all the crapola that commercial models put on theirs, slowing them down. I got a 2.8 Mhz processor but with 1 Gb of RAM. It’s mighty fast.

Well, I’m a Mac convert, and I’ll never go back to the PC Windows world. I have an iBook G4 laptop, which suits me fine since I don’t do much but blog and write and surf with it. My wife has an iMac desktop machine with more umph. Goodbye Windows!
