sunday house

I let my friends talk me into being president of the local chapter of the Native Plant Society this year. One of my first responsibilities was to travel to Fredericksburg last weekend to represent the chapter at the site of the new state office. Actually, “new” state office may not be the correct term, since there never has been a physical state office until now. Just a PO box.

The state office will be in a building recently purchased by the Gillespie County Historical Society. It’s an old Sunday house built in the nineteenth century and remodelled several times since. Eventually it will be restored to it’s original configuration, which would be a little like the one above, which is another Sunday house in the same block also owned by the historical society. Sunday houses are little one or two room town houses originally built by farmers who wanted to bring their families into town on Saturdays for market and stay overnight to go to church.

It should give the club good visibility. Fredericksburg is a town with 10,000 residents and a million visitors a year, according to their chamber of commerce. In an average week that would mean there were almost twice as many visitors as residents. Most of them probably on Saturday.

    Congrats Mr. President! :)

We just started a wildflower society in our county last year. It’s been so much fun!

I’m so glad you wrote about Sunday houses. I’ve seen small houses like that before and wondered about them. There are not many in this area though.

  5. Thanks for explaining about Sunday houses. Haven’t seen anything like them here in the UK. The only things similar are small beach huts where owners keep table and chairs and brew a cup of tea for a day on the beach. However, only a few Authorities allow people to sleep in them.

    Lovely photos
