I could go on and on about all the injustices that former caretakers have taken with our little bit of paradise. But here is one I won’t complaine about.
This set of steps makes the ascent of this hill a lot more comfortable for a tired old man like me. Mind you it still can leave me out of breath.
We seem to have an abundance of flat rectangular rocks around here. Someone spent a lot of effort arranging them and also enhanced a few of the steps with concrete to make them more secure. I am glad I was not the one to have to lug the sacks of concrete down this hillside.
It’s interesting isn’t it that some rocks break naturally at right angles and flat surfaces, while rocks in other places can be as round as cannonballs?

I have a layer of sandstone along my ridgetops not too far under the soil that I hope will cleave nicely and that I can use for building stone. Round rocks - not so good for building with.
When I lived in the Aleutians, I noticed that all of the rocks on the Bering Sea side of the island were totally ROUND. THe whole area was volcanic and should have been rugged. It was the movement of the water and the rocks against each other that had smoothed them and rounded them all out.
What an inviting path to take.
Merry Christmas to you!
What is that? Slate?
Yes, I would keep it as it is, too.
