sun sets on our favorite cafe

palo pinto cafe

Not long after we started driving through Palo Pinto, a little cafe across the street from the courthouse square became one of our favorites. They made a great burger and their home-made chocolate pie was about the best I have ever had. Tricia claimed the buttermilk pie was just as good.

The food was great but the ambiance could not be beat. Not only was there a screen door but it was torn in just the way that I always remembered screen doors being torn back when I was a kid. We got to be kind of semi-regulars there.

Once we were eating in the front room and my jaw dropped as a procession of a dozen of the prettiest women I have ever seen walked out from the back. They were doing a photo shoot there for a clothes catalog. And the bikers certainly knew about it too. There was always a crew there on the weekends. It’s a natural stop right at the end of twisty Highway 4, a favorite route for bike riders.

This weekend there were no models and no bikes in the parking lot. Only a realtor’s sign. The world is a little bit sadder place tonight.

    Love that old telephone booth!
Never seen one like that stateside before. Are they the old style for your neck of the woods? Or is it a whimsical import?

  2. Bill:

I have wondered about the old phone booth myself. I haven’t been able to learn the story. I do not know of another one like it anywhere nearby. It looks British to me. I do know that it works however.

Dont you just hate when A great cafe goes out of business?

  4. Cowtown Pattie:

    Sad, very sad.

Wonder how much they are selling the place for?

Those kind of places are hard to come by and seem to get more rare all the time. One of our favorites is Flossie’s Cafe in Strawn. In talking to an artist from Gordon recently I understand that it’s still there…

  6. Linda:

Reminds me of the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” Overbrook Kansas has two little hometown places that we frequent. Their buildings aren’t as quaint, but food is great.

  7. Leslie:

I wonder what the owners will do once it’s sold? Places like that are such a rare thing.

  8. Bill :

Wallace: Haven’t been to Flossie’s. Will put it on the agenda.

Linda: Hopefully, there are any missing ex-husbands around.

I have been hunting in Palo Pinto Co. for 9 years & even as a kid went on a few trips to Lake Palo Pinto with friends who had a lake cabin there… always had wonderful memories of the whole area. I like to try the different local restaurants when I’m there & Palo Pinto Cafe was my favorite. It was the one that I always went to when I had friends with me just to show it to them (along with New York Hill, tho PP cafe was my fav). I was in town to tour the old jailhouse museum just this past week & saw the real estate sign. I don’t even think I knew it had been closed at that time. It was a great place with such a unique building, picket fence, the phone booth, vintage looking signs, good food; everything seemed so homey & comforting (except the straight back benches in the booths!). Sure hated to see it closed! BTW, Flossie’s & Mary’s, both in Strawn, are good… I can never remember which is which (they are across the street from each other) but in my opinion the better food, but not so much in atmosphere is the one on the east side of the road. I have been there on the weekend when there is a waiting line forming outside, especially true on weekends during football & deer season. Another good place to try is BJ’s Mingus… It is a family friendly pizza parlor on one end, a bar right in the middle & one or 2 pool tables on the other end. Great Pizza! It also has pinball tables, video games & mounted game animals on the walls including a Mountain Lion.

THIS IS TRUELY A UNIQUE PLACE!!! THEY HAD THE BEST FRIED CATFISH AND GREAT MEMORIES OF ALL THE FOOD & ATMOSPHERE. A SUNNY DAY IN THE FALL WAS MY FAVORITE TIME, BUT ANYTIME IT WAS OUTSTANDING. I REMEMBER GOING TO BALL TOURNAMENTS IN MINERAL WELLS AND COMING THERE TO COOL OFF AND RELAX.

  11. Tricia:

YEAH ! It’s been reopened…new owner, but they kept the decor and the friendly atmosphere. !
    Best of luck, Mary
