I don’t know what this is. The plant just showed up in a shady area under some trees. Actually it may have been there quite a while but I didn’t notice it until it flowered.
I haven’t found it in any of my picture books yet. It sort of sprawls, a bit like a vine on the ground. I kind of like it but it will probably turn out to be something toxic and invasive. I know some of my gardening readers will recognize it. If you know what it is let me know, please.
Lots of plants are flowering after the big rains we’ve had in the past week. Most of them I know however. Besides rain lilies which I’ve already mentioned, the roses are blooming again. Lantana and zexmenia are also brightening up the border garden.
It’s still hot in the afternoon but evenings are getting nice enough to work outside again.
Update: Tony of milkriverblog got it I think. It’s some kind of milkpea, possibly Galactia volubilis. Thanks, Tony.

Kind of reminds me of our blue passion flower…
As for scale, the flower is about an inch in diameter. The plant itself about 8 or 9 inches tall and about 24 inches in diameter.
Looks like it might be something in the legumes… pea family. It’s awfully pretty.
Good luck with the ID. Wish I had more than a guess for you.
This is one of the vetches or milkpeas. You may have both introduced and native species in your area.
