prairie point

the elms

Filed under: another roadside attraction — 7/19/2005

Just got back from a weekend in the Kansas City area. Frankly it seemed hotter and more humid there than it is in Texas right now. Besides going to Tricia’s family reunion we spent a night at the Elms Hotel, an historic resort in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

Tricia’s family moved to Excelsior Springs when she was teenager. She always wanted to go to the fancy hotel, so she finally got to fulfill a dream. On the way home however she confided that the anticipation was better than the consummation.

We made the trip by car. Going up we took I35. The only good thing about that route is traveling through the prairies on the Flint Hills. You could almost imagine that you see Indians and buffalo. Since we will be making this trip every so often, we were looking for a pleasant route that doesn’t involve an interstate. Coming back we tried 169 south from Lawrence to Tulsa which was mostly just right, but then we had to take 75 to connect with 69 and that leg was not quite so great.
