We got a couple of nice rains last week, enough moisture to put life back in some of the plants. But it’s still mostly the western plants that are doing any blooming, including the red yucca.
Sometimes we see hummingbirds on the yucca, but not as much as on the flame acanthus or at the feeder on the back porch. Despite it’s name red yucca is not red and it is also not a yucca. The flowers are more what I would call a coral than red. It’s a member of the lily family. It’s a nice plant though. Hesperaloe parviflora is the botanical name.
I am having a hard time keeping up my interest in gardening this summer. It’s probably no hotter than usual. I don’t know how to explain the flagging interest, maybe I just need a little break from it. Maybe I have too many things pulling me in other directions. If I look back I might find that I often lose interest about this time of year.

Maybe it is time for a break. I think, too, that it depends on the weather: when it’s a constant struggle (not sure if that’s the case in your neck of the woods), it seems like so much work; other years, it’s a cake walk.
And from where exactly did the term cake walk originate?
Hmmm…
Pretty picture though.
I just think it’s too hot too soon… Plus, this is our “winter.” Just like the plants, we all need to rest.
