afternoon of a fawn

Traipsing through the woods in the late afternoon I saw a pair of eyes watching me from a pile of brush. It was a young fawn not more than four feet away, hardly moving, just watching. I froze while we studied each other for awhile. Then I backed off and watched for momma. Might have been her off by the road but she did not come close. Maybe she sensed me and did not want to approach her fawn and give it away.
I went back the next afternoon with my neighbor and his grand-daughter and he was still in much the same place. This time I got too close trying to position myself for the best camera angle. Suddenly he sprang to his feet and bounded off through the forest.

Oh, what a wonderful encounter! It’s such a treat to have a few quiet moments with such a sweet little thing. I bet you’re right about the mother not wanting to give away her baby’s spot.

You’ve been blessed indeed, and how great to share it with your neighbor.
Reminds me of a time when I was feeling particularly frazzled. That usually sends me off on a hike somewhere in search of serenity. I asked the park ranger for a good trail, and headed out. It was a looooooong, hot, rather boring walk and all along I was grousing in my head, “Okay, God, why’d you send me on this dumb hot walk?”
And all of a sudden a big stag leapt over the path just in front of me, over my head.
