lantana

lantana

These colors always remind me of Easter. Too bad lantana doesn’t start blooming until it gets hot.

    That’s a lovely flower, isn’t it? Is it a bush-like plant, like a rhodie?

It is a low sprawling kind of shrub. Some varieties like this one are a little taller than others, but they generally don’t get taller than a couple feet. This one is about 3 feet in diameter now. They bloom from about now until frost.

Often they die to the ground in winter here but come back. Many people just rip them up and re-plant them every year. This is close to the northern limit for them.

The latin name is Lantana horrida, the last part coming from the smell of the leaves. It’s a strong smell but I happen to like it.

There are several varieties and many cultivars in different colors. The classic native Texas variety is red and yellow or pink and yellow. The gold cultivar appears to be the most popular. There is also a variety from further south that is blue. That is my favorite. It hasn’t bloomed yet. It’s a smaller plant that is less woody.

That is probably more than you wanted to know.

The red is my favorite and I do have to plant evey year, however it is worth it..yes, they stink, but I like the smell..as long as the hummers do..I do not really care for the gold!
I like the spider flowers(cleome) for the same reason and they come back…just like weeds–millions of them!
