lush life

Filed under: outside in the garden — 4/18/2005

The yard has never appeared more lush and colorful than it has this last week. In the front yard especially the roses have never been more abundant and all the irises are blooming at once. In between are purple salvias, pink salvias and bright red Texas betony. It is a visual and olfactory delight.

All of this beauty hides the ugly story lurking out back. Actually it is pretty lush there too although a lot of the lushness is weeds. I have really let things get out of hand. Part of the problem is that I was too ambitious. I made too many beds and I can’t take care of them all. Some of them were not properly prepared in the first place and the weeds have come in fast.

I sowed wildflower seeds in one corner of the yard and they have spread everywhere. Some of my plants have jumped out of the beds entirely and are taking over the lawn. I have accomodated them by mowing around them. I have horrible weeds in the grass and in the beds - crabgrass and bedstraw, which is the worst weed that I know of. There are pecan and hackberry trees sprouting all over the place. A huge and ugly artemesia is spreading across the ground like a giant octopus.

It is time to get really serious and start mowing things down.

Sounds like you’re describing my garden. A friend dropped by unexpectedly this evening and I took her out back to get some daffodil bulbs I saved her. The larkspur and other wildflowers are peaking. The roses and irises look great. But the weeds! I was appalled to see the yard through someone else’s eyes. Weeds in the paths. In the lawn. In the beds. I think I got an upper hand on the bedstraw this year…but the cranesbill is everywhere. And all sorts of grasses I don’t want are either seeding or creeping wildly.
