I found these bones along the south fence. It’s a young deer who probably got its foot caught in the top of the fence and didn’t make it. There is a small herd of about seven that we see quite often.
This morning I was planting near the house when I felt some eyes on me and turned around. There was one watching me at the edge of the woods about 100 feet away. Making a mental note I am sure to come back when I wasn’t around. They eat or pull up just about anything in the vegetable family. Saturday I replanted a dozen iris bulbs they had pulled up and scattered.
Yes, they are cute but it does not bother me to find the bones of one who did not make it. Their natural predators have all been run off or exterminated, and there seems to be an over-abundance of them in these parts. Last month I saw a pair grazing next to the access road of a busy interstate.

Where is Coyote when we need him?
Oh, right, trapped and hunted away from ‘civilization.’
I have been seeing more and more of coyote in the suburban/ semi-rural-rapidly-turning-to-bedroom communities around these parts.
ALl the coyotes are up here. They yelp and holler at Sadie over the back fence. I am SURE they are inviting her for DINNER<
I love me some bones, man. The only bummer I see with regard to the photo above is that the animal probably suffered quite a bit being tangled in that fence. But, what can you do, you know?
We have a few deer around here, too, but they aren’t numerous enough to be too much of a pest. Then again, I haven’t tried growing vegetables, or other things that they like to eat.
Plus, I am aware that they are really putting a damper on plant diversity in areas where they are poorly controlled.
Venison is delicious, anyways.
We have major problems with deer here in West St. Louis County……..all of our local communities have been trying to deal with an exploding population of deer that eat everything in sight in all local subdivisions……….Some communities have been trying to capture the deer to relocate them, other communities have had some restricted shoots of the deer - nothing seems to work……..I can remember coming home after working a 3-11pm shift & finding a buck & several does in my driveway- my car lights ran them off………yet I saw them again the next morning in my yard………I have read that this is a mojor problem in many rural communities, not just in St. Louis……..
Woke up this morning with Mickey Mud Turtle and Amanda Possum on my mind/heart. A Google search brought me this good place on the internet where many similarities to my own life resonate.
