sunflowers

Maximilian sunflower stems are almost stripped of seeds and leaves. Their twisted stems pass for our garden in January.

I just saw a sunflower sprout 2 inches tall in my berm this afternoon, green as good be, but not in a place where sunflowers will grow in my yard; the birds that I feed dropped it there. Hyacinths and flowering quince are out, and daffodils are actually 6 inches tall, of course without flowers yet. Spring is coming.

Yowee! Isnt that early? I noticed green buds on my crab apple tree, but nothing else is budding. Even the pussy willow is late!!

  3. My Maxmillion sunflowers failed last summer, so I never got a chance to see what they looked like. The Hopi Dye sunflowers did well, and I tryed dying wool with the hulls, but got only a pale lavender color, rather than the black I was supposed to. But at least the seeds were tasty!
