We had snow here this afternoon! Yes it is pretty, but then I had to drive home on the icy overpasses. Should have left work early.
Tonight the temperatures will be in the upper teens. Good thing we got the furnace going again. Yesterday it stopped working. Tricia did not notice until late afternoon. I went up into the attic to check it out after I got home. Sometimes when we have strong winds there is a little door that will blow open on the front of the furnace. It won’t work with the door open. But that wasn’t the case this time and I ran out of ideas. So we called a repairman this morning and paid $70 to learn that the battery in the thermostat needed to be replaced. Thermostats have batteries? Who knew?

Is it a southern thing to have one’s furnace in the attic? Ours is in the basement.
Sometimes it’s a space thing - small houses on slabs in Michigan will often have an attic furnace.
Nobody in Texas even has a basement. Usually it is only if the house is built into a hillside where one side of the basement is above ground. Or else the owner felt they needed a fallout shelter.
The options are to put the furnace in a closet or in the attic. Newer houses generally put them in a closet. We have an older house built in the 1940’s with not many closets but a large attic so it seemed more efficient to put it there. Originally the house was heated with space heaters and we converted it to central heat/air.
I never heard of a furnace in the attic- I have a brother in Houston & I think his furnace is in the garage………..
I’ve been checking in on your blog but haven’t sent any comments recently as my life has been extra busy………I went on a photographic expedition to the Galapagos Islands in November which was absolutely awesome…….but it set me back with holiday preparations……..Shopping, baking, housecleaning, while working full time- not enough hours in the day! I am also preparing 2 slide shows of my Galapagos pictures to present in January at my hospital & my local Wild Bird Center…………………….It is currently freezing cold here in St. Louis- the temp when I went to work this morning was 8 degrees! Am having my family here tomorrow (Friday) for our Christmas as I have to work Christmas weekend this year- goes with the Nursing territory- work one Christmas- off the next…………..I do hope you & your family have a nice Christmas…………

I had no idea they had batteries either. I guess $70 for the repairman is a far cry better than having to replace the whole thing. Phew.
You guys have made news way up here with your wacky weather.
Merry Christmas, Bill! : )
Merry Christmas Bill and Tricia. Drive safe and have a peaceful holiday.
Merry Christmas!!!
My thermostat acts stupid at times. I have the programable kind. I guess I should use the expensive batteries.
My furnace is in the closet and I have a large house space heater, capped off now as propane is way to expensive the last few years. I had them deliver 100 gallons before the blue norther came in… 1.959 per gallon and that is with gasoline at 1.64 doesn’t seem right.
And the guy left the gate open and the horses got out in the yard. All but the gelding was cooperative in being caught. I should charge them.
Happy New Year, too!!!
I hope that you had a Merry Christmas. I’m so glad that you got the furnace working again.
