garden update

Filed under: outside in the garden — 10/28/2004

We had an invitation to drive out this weekend to visit our friends in Alpine but it looks as if it is just not in the cards. Too many thngs going on at home. We will have to take a raincheck.

Speaking of rain, we have had showers off and on all week. The moisture and cool weather have made changes in the garden. The sunflowers are all gone now, but the roses are revitalized. The Iceberg and the Mutabilis are especially full of blossoms.

I had to mow the front lawn tonight after work. I don’t like to think about spending my time maintaining St Augustine but it is actually the easiest landscape to manage, except for concrete. It doesn’t take much time and you don’t even have to think while you mow. There are some people who love the look of a grassy lawn, and others who turn up their noses at it. I like to think of it as just the space between intersting parts of the garden.

My grass is about 8″ tall right now, but it hasnt quit raining long enough for it to dry enough to mow it. If we tried right now, it would all just lay down. Such is winter in Washington.

Our lawn is beginning to hibernate.

I stumbled across a photo of our back yard when it was all lush and green — it felt like ages ago that we were enjoying that.

Sorry to hear your plans have been put on hold. You certainly have had a lot on your plate lately.

A beautiful weekend here in St. Louis……..worked out in the yard- cut everything back, cleaned out the flower beds of fallen leaves & dead stalks……….A few weeks ago I cut down the milkweed and the fennel…….today I noticed the fennel growing again- do I leave it or should I cut it down again?? Not sure what I’m supposed to do about it………..This year I had hundreds of yellow aphids on the milkweed- sprayed it with a non-pesticide solution - didn’t help much & caused the milkweed to look terrible- was this the reason I didn’t get any monarchs laying eggs this year? Or was it the hailstorms that caused a drop in the monarchs? Nature plays such havoc and my plans for great photos went for naught……..Any advice?
